Design features

Cutting speeds

The characteristics of the fiber source and the optical chain developed by Salvagnini, comprising the fiber that transports the beam and the focusing head, generate a laser beam with a high power density for high-speed cutting (more than 60 m/min) on medium and thin material and high-quality cutting on thicker sheets.

Running costs (per hour)

The L5 boasts extremely low running costs that are provided thanks to:

  • The high performance of the source and chiller
  • The elimination of an optical path
  • The elimination of laser gas
  • Low maintenance costs
  • The option for cutting with compressed air

The compass: high dynamics and low consumption

The L5 has benefits of being equipped with the original patented mechanical solution of a “compass” design. This structure is made possible by the absence of a defined optical path and features lean carbon arms driven by a pair of rotary motors that move the cutting head on the XY plane in the distance of 170 mm while the dynamics is up to 5g with reduced power consumption on account of the light weight. The compass is the very heart of the mechanical solution designed by Salvagnini that provides same dynamics as offered by linear motors, but on account of the light weight, energy consumption and running costs are cut and kept competitive.

EtherCAT protocol

The Six numeric controller is equipped with a high-speed communication system EtherCAT as such is required to ensure the desired performance at high cutting speeds provided by the fiber laser sources. The numerical controller controls the axis movement, the position of the focused laser beam, the laser source parameters and the use of auxiliary gases providing constant and accurate process synchronization.

High-quality cutting with a single optic

The L5 system features a focusing head developed entirely in-house by Salvagnini that is exalting all the previous experience of the company and is tended to improve the features and dynamics offered by optical fiber transmission. The head features a single optic for high-quality cutting across the entire range of thicknesses, assuring fast production changeovers and slashing retooling times.


Laser TRADJUST is a revolutionary series of proprietary functions incorporated into the CNC of Salvagnini SiX controller. This series of functions flawlessly combines the requirements of the application to the cutting process with the trajectories generated by CAMLaser. TRADJUST automatically, and transparently for convenience of the operator, calculates the modulation of cutting parameters as a function of changes in direction, speed and instantaneous acceleration. Accordingly, with a single, predetermined cutting parameter for every material and thickness, regardless of the cutting profile, the L5 system could not be simpler to use.

A wide range of machinable materials

Thanks to the wavelength typical of fiber, the L5 system can:

  • Effectively cut even highly reflective materials, such as high purity aluminum alloys, brass and copper, the metals that are extremely difficult to process on traditional CO2 systems;
  • Provide high cutting speeds and combine that with high quality cutting of coated materials such as zinc-coated and galvanized steel.

Exclusive automation solutions

Due to the wide range of available devices for material transportation, L5 can work in the unmanned production mode and can be easily integrated into flexible manufacturing systems AJS or FMS. Various loading and unloading devices allow optimization of the production flow by eliminating unnecessary operations and the associated costs and providing at the same time high quality and guaranteeing fast return on investments. With all these characteristics, the Salvagnini systems can adapt perfectly to the different requirements of production and, according to the process development in the manufacturing enterprise of the customer, can be used both as stand-alone units and as integrated parts of automated manufacturing facility systems.

Airplane structure

L5 has the same patented airplane structure as other laser cutting systems designed by Salvagnini have: the principle of a load-bearing beam with an airplane-like manipulator produces an extremely rigid construction that guarantees precise, stable positioning of the focusing head and easy access to the worktable. Elimination of the optical path, typical for the machines designed only for fiber laser cutting, helps avoiding many design restrictions and significantly reducing the inertia of the system by making the structure lighter and improving compactness of the kinematic chain.

SRP optical centering sensor

The L5 System can be equipped with an optical centering sensor (SRP), which allows:
  • Quicker positioning of the blank to be processed.
  • Implementation of the centering required for post-processing operations in cases when processed parts have been previously subjected to other operations (punching, caulking or deep-drawing).
  • SRP is completely integrated with CAMFiber and can be programmed in the "one click” mode.

Software suites

Salvagnini offers a complete suite of software for management of its laser systems. The many modules that compose the management suite are subdivided into three areas, and assure ease of use, productivity and process integration.

Every Salvagnini laser system comes completely equipped with a suite of software packages (JOB.CONSOLE) that allows the operator to manage the system in a simple and intuitive way. Particular attention has been placed on the management of diagnostics (EASYDATA) and on maintenance (MAINTENANCE MANAGER). The on-board programming suite can be augmented by the simulation package (SIMFiber) and by nesting software to be programmed directly on the machine (NestFiberLight).
The METALSTUDIO platform’s CAD/CAM+NEST software packages and the simulation and time-cost and production cost analysis packages make these machines highly competitive and allow their owners responding effectively to the changing needs of the market.

The OPS applications allow the integration of Salvagnini systems with a company’s MRP/ERP system. These custom packages provide a customer increased control, streamlined processes, and a substantial reduction of costs, through the elimination of errors and low value activities.

The electronic source: low consumption, zero maintenance

Compared to a traditional CO2 laser source, the fiber source provides energy savings of more than 70% and a reduction of running costs by more than 50%. Practically eliminated, near zero, is the energy consumption during warm up and standby; the energy consumption of the entire system (machine, 3 kW resonator, chiller and connections) during stand-by is always less than 5 kW.

Total safety

Salvagnini’s fiber laser systems are CLASS 1 machines. The machine comes equipped with all the necessary protection to assure absolute safety in compliance with current standards. The laser cutting device is completely enclosed from all sides and equipped with a protective cap. In addition, the large observation windows are approved for solid state laser use. The source is equipped with advanced beam reflection control systems on three levels to ensure beam integrity and operational safety. The optic fiber has a diameter of 50 mkm which allows using very thin laser beams that way maximally reducing the risks.
